Sleep apnea and erectile dysfunction
If you snore loudly and wake up tired no matter how long you sleep, your body may be telling you something. Obstructive sleep apnea is common, often missed, and treatable. It can also affect your energy, your heart, and your sex life.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?
With obstructive sleep apnea, the airway in your throat gets blocked again and again while you sleep. Your breathing stops and starts, sometimes many times an hour. Each time, your oxygen level drops and your sleep is broken up, even if you don’t remember waking.
Extra weight, a large neck (17 inches or more for men), drinking alcohol before bed, and sleeping on your back can all raise the risk.
Signs to watch for
Many men don’t know they have it until a partner tells them. Common signs include:
- At night: loud, frequent snoring, breathing that stops and starts, gasping for air, or waking often to urinate
- During the day: feeling sleepy or worn out, morning headaches, trouble focusing, or a short temper
- In the bedroom: lower sex drive or trouble with erections
How it affects energy, hormones and erections
Broken sleep leaves you tired, and being tired can drain your interest in sex. Sexual problems and a lower sex drive are listed among the symptoms of sleep apnea.
Low testosterone can also lower sex drive and cause problems with erections. If low energy and low desire are part of the picture, ask your doctor whether a simple blood test to check your testosterone makes sense.
The heart connection
When breathing stops over and over, the drops in oxygen can strain your heart and blood vessels. Untreated sleep apnea raises the risk of high blood pressure that is hard to control, heart attack, heart failure, an irregular heartbeat, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
Those same problems, especially high blood pressure, diabetes, and blood vessel disease, are common causes of erectile dysfunction (ED). So ED can be an early warning sign that something bigger needs a look, sometimes including your sleep.
Getting tested
Your doctor will ask about your sleep, snoring, and how tired you feel during the day. They will check your mouth, neck, and throat. A sleep study is needed to confirm sleep apnea and see how serious it is. Your doctor will explain where and how the study is done.
If you snore, feel tired all the time, or have noticed changes in your erections, bring it up at your next visit. It’s a normal conversation for your doctor, and you don’t need to have all the answers. Just tell them what’s going on.
Treatment options
Treatment can make a real difference in how you feel. Your doctor will help you find what fits you.
- CPAP: a small bedside machine sends gentle air pressure through a mask to keep your airway open; it works well for most people who use it
- Weight loss: losing extra weight can ease symptoms, and it helps your heart, too
- Oral devices: a mouthpiece made by a dentist can hold your jaw forward to keep your airway open
- Habits: avoid alcohol near bedtime, try not to sleep on your back, stay active, and quit smoking
